Description
Glossostigma Carpet Plant – Glossostigma elatinoides
Create a lush, bright-green carpet across your aquascape with one of the hobby’s classic foreground plants.
Glossostigma elatinoides, commonly known as Glosso, is a beautiful carpeting aquarium plant famous for its tiny, fresh-green leaves and dense, low-growing appearance. Under strong lighting with adequate CO₂ and nutrients, Glosso spreads horizontally across the substrate, creating a natural green lawn effect.
It is an excellent choice for Nature Aquariums, Iwagumi layouts, planted tanks and high-tech aquascapes where a clean and vibrant foreground carpet is desired.

🍀 Why Choose Glossostigma?
Glossostigma is loved by aquascapers because its small leaves can create an exceptionally fine-textured foreground. Instead of producing a coarse or grassy appearance, established Glosso forms a soft-looking green mat that beautifully complements rocks, driftwood and taller stem plants.
Once established under suitable conditions, the plant sends runners through the substrate and gradually fills the spaces between individual planting clusters.
✨ Ideal For
- Creating a dense green aquarium carpet
- Iwagumi aquascapes
- Foreground planting around rocks
- Nature-style aquariums
- Nano planted tanks
- Shrimp aquariums
- High-tech CO₂-injected tanks
- Adding contrast against red and orange stem plants
Medium to high lighting is recommended.
Lighting plays an important role in determining the growth pattern of Glossostigma. With sufficient light, the plant tends to remain compact and spread horizontally.
Under insufficient light, Glosso may begin growing upward instead of across the substrate, producing longer stems and a less compact carpet.
For the best appearance, provide strong but balanced lighting while maintaining stable CO₂ and nutrient levels.
CO₂ injection is strongly recommended for a dense carpet.
Glossostigma can be demanding when the goal is to achieve the classic low-growing aquascaping carpet. Stable CO₂ encourages faster establishment, healthier leaves and horizontal runner development.
A well-balanced combination of:
Good light + stable CO₂ + nutrient-rich substrate + regular fertilization
will generally produce the best results.
For faster carpet formation, avoid planting the entire portion as one large bunch.
Carefully divide the plant into small plugs or individual clusters and plant them separately across the foreground using aquascaping tweezers.
Leave a small amount of space between each cluster.
As the plants establish, runners will begin filling these gaps and eventually connect into a continuous carpet.
HydroNook Planting Tip
Plant Glosso relatively deep so the roots remain secure while keeping the leaves above the substrate. Small portions planted across a wider area usually produce a more natural carpet than one large concentrated clump.
Once your Glossostigma carpet becomes established, regular trimming helps maintain its compact appearance.
If allowed to become excessively thick, older lower growth can become shaded. Periodic trimming encourages fresh growth and prevents the carpet from becoming overly layered.
Remove loose or unhealthy leaves during routine aquarium maintenance.
Glossostigma looks especially attractive when planted around Dragon Stone, Seiryu-style stone, lava rock and natural driftwood.
For an Iwagumi layout, a predominantly Glosso foreground can create the impression of a miniature landscape or rolling green field.
For more colorful planted tanks, combine its bright green carpet with background plants such as:
Rotala • Ludwigia • Alternanthera • Ammania • Pogostemon • Hygrophila
The small green leaves provide excellent contrast against red, orange and bronze plants.
A mature Glosso carpet creates a highly textured environment that shrimp and other small aquarium inhabitants can explore.
Its dense growth also provides additional surface area for microorganisms and biofilm within an established aquarium ecosystem.
📦 What You Will Receive
You will receive healthy Glossostigma elatinoides suitable for planting in freshwater aquariums.
Plants are living products, so leaf size, density, coloration and overall appearance may naturally vary depending on growth stage and season.
Some temporary adjustment after planting is normal while the plant adapts to your aquarium conditions.
